What is a Driver Safety Program?

  • Carl Sandburg College is proud to offer a Driver Safety Program, which provides an alternative to having a violation on your driving record. This program is an innovative approach to traffic safety, taught by qualified, personable instructors and assumes you are already a good driver.

This workshop emphasizes driving under stress, attitudes and emotion affecting driving and the best defensive-driving techniques. The goal of the program is to provide an interesting and informative class and to provide skills to make driving a safe and enjoyable experience. Sandburg's Driver Safety Program is approved for use by the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court. This class is not intended for individuals with no driving citation.

What is the length of the Driver Safety Program?

  • Traffic court mandates students attend a four-hour class, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there are two 15-minute break times provided. Failure to attend the entire class will negate the term of your court supervision.

I received a traffic ticket and have questions about ticket payments, court appearance dates and if I am eligible to complete a Driver Safety Program. Who should I contact?

  • Please contact the Circuit Clerk in the county where you obtained your traffic ticket. (Knox County Traffic Division's phone number: is 309.345.3841.)

How do I enroll in the Driver Safety Program?

  • Call 309.345.3501 to register or visit Carl Sandburg College's Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME), G Building, 2051 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., Galesburg, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

What is the Driver Safety Program registration fee?

  • There is a $65 fee to enroll. Pre-registration and payment are required, and early registration is encouraged. It is the responsibility of the court-supervised individual to be aware of court dates and by when the class should be completed. Once registered, the $65 fee is non-refundable; however, you may move to another class date (permitted one time). Cash, credit/debit card or a money order are accepted forms of payment (no personal checks). Cost and conditions are subject to change without notice.

Is there a book to purchase and an exam given?

  • The Driver Safety Program is a lecture-based discussion. The book will be screen-shared during the Zoom video conference for students to follow along. There is no exam given.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

  • If you acquired your traffic violation outside of Knox County, your completion certificate will be emailed, and you may print a copy for the county's courthouse. For those with driving violations in Knox County, your completion certificate will be forwarded directly to the Knox County Courthouse.

How will I know if my class is postponed due to instructor absence or other unforeseen circumstances?

  • In the event of class postponement, the Workforce Development & Community Education staff will phone and/or email individuals as soon as possible. After registering for a class, any changes to email addresses or phone numbers should be communicated for notification purposes.

On rare occasions, a class may be canceled due to low enrollment numbers. You should enroll early to complete the program in advance of the required court date. Carl Sandburg College and staff are not responsible for students who miss the class and the court denies a completion date extension.
